To give is to freely transfer the possession of (something) to (someone); hand over to.
The holidays have always been designated as the perfect time to give. Here we are, in the middle of another season, yet things are so different this year! The pressure of buying gifts is hardly over, parties are looking very different or non-existent, and keeping the magic of hope alive is more important than ever. Some are getting to their roots and keeping festivities simpler than ever whilst others are going out with a bang to make up for what a crazy year it has been. Whether you have decided one way or the other, or a little in between, let’s continue to boost spirits and serotonin levels, even our own, when depression is at it’s highest for many people due to the lack of sun and the loneliness that may settle in for others this time of year. According to the article, Hidden Brain by NPR, “The holidays are about nurturing our best selves: the altruistic, compassionate and generous side.” How have you done so far this year? Why not keep it going all year?
Now where do you start? Many find it difficult to know where to help. One can look in the local newspaper or investigate a local church or school social media. You may call your local homeless shelter, children’s hospital or nursing home. Asking a neighbor, local businesses or radio stations can also be beneficial. Here at TJC Real Estate and Management Services, we try to find ways to give all year round. Being a part of the community and supporting the needs of our community are very important to every staff member here at TJC. Need some real-time ideas? Along with our blood donations and Children’s Hospital in the spring, volunteering to help the Central Park (formerly Stapleton) MCA with the summer distancing events, we decided to create a Kindness Campaign this year in lieu of the ups and downs in everyone’s world. Our Kindness Campaign included supporting local businesses and spontaneously buying community members lunch, ice cream, pet supplies, and car washes. We also had a Tuesdays for Teachers event where we sent our local teachers uplifting gifts to their homes. Our most recent altruistic and community-building endeavor, which is still going on for 2 more weeks, is our 12 Weeks of Kindness Campaign. To count down to the end of the year we chose 12 ways to reach out collectively as a team to support local charities and community members in need.
Realize that every little bit helps and by showing others how they can do the same will make your gift even larger as the spirit of giving is very contagious. Along with giving, remember that attending social gatherings, community events, and local fundraisers are other ways to spread joy, build community and create bonds that make those lives around us brighter. Happy New Year from our family to yours!
